WOC in MEDIA: White women imitating Vitiligo of Winnie Harlow in black face
I don’t normally like to post or comment on topics such as this via the site. I simply like to focus effort on more uplifting content. HOWEVER, I do think these topics are very relevant to my audience and I look forward to the dialog.
Let’s take this from the top for those that have absolutely no idea who Winnie Harlow is. Chantelle Brown-Young aka ‘Winnie Harlow’ was a contestant on cycle 21 of America’s Next Top Model. There was a buzz around Winnie during her time on the show as she has the skin condition vitiligo.
It would seem white ladies on the web are colouring themselves in to resemble the Canadian model. One of the pictures as well as black face featured micro braids and a crown. My views on 21st century ‘Black Face’, are often VERY different from that of the black masses. You can read one of my posts expressing my views (here). In this instance, I can’t help but feel a little uncomfortable at the imitation. It almost feels like mocking opposed to a celebration of her skin condition. I feel as though this was a missed opportunity to just celebrate the condition Vitiligo…PERIOD. Vitiligo can be found within all ethnic groups, not just black people. Post pictures of how it looks for white women to have the condition, that would be cool. I am sure it would also be a lot more inspirational to many if they cut the black face.
