W.I.T.J – When and why did you decide to go back to your natural tresses?M – I have been natural most of my life and relaxed it for about 4 years. I made the decision to go natural when I realized how much upkeep my relaxed hair required. I was coming into my own as young woman and started to pay more attention to my outward appearance. Having relaxed hair and looking cute on a budget just didn’t seem like it was about to happen.
W.I.T.J –Has your natural hair always been well received by people around you?M – Initially when I shared with my older sisters that I wanted to go natural they were somewhat hesitant, but most of my girlfriends are natural so they were all very excited and had lots of tips to share.
W.I.T.J – How would you describe your natural texture?M – That’s a tough one. It’s thick but manageable. My curls are small and tightly coiled.
W.I.T.J – Could we have a brief break down of what your hair regimen consists of?
W.I.T.J – Have you had any hair set backs and what most frustrates you about you hair and why?M – I haven’t had any setbacks. I would say I mostly frustrated when I can’t decide how to style my hair. I don’t trust stylists in my hair, so I tend to get bored easily.
W.I.T.J – What do you love about your hair and would you ever go back to relaxing?M – I love the thickness of it. I can’t even bring myself to flat iron it so I doubt I will ever want to relax it again. I love experimenting with new styles.
W.I.T.J – What are your go to styles?M – I wear a puff most of the time. But I just started to experiment with protective styling. I managed to get it into a high bun once and if I had the patience that would probably be my go to style.
W.I.T.J – Do you have any hair goal, if so, what are these?M – Yes! I was so inspired by Kimmaytube and I would love to grow my hair to waist length. Right now it’s right below my shoulders, but with the shrinkage it looks like I just BC’d
W.I.T.J – What advise would you give someone contemplating going natural?M – Research. Natural hair is a real lifestyle change and if you want to commit to it, you should have an idea of what you are getting into.
W.I.T.J –If you were stranded in the Amazonian rainforest which one product could you not live without and why?M – Shea Butter. Nothing seals in moisture like Shea Butter and I love the way it makes my hair feels. It also does double duty because it’s great for my skin as well.
